I passed my final examination. With the exception of the ----- return trip by steamer to Swatow I had to pay all my own travelling expenses. My salary of $40 was not enough to keep one for the 1st three years, my parents having to add considerably to that amount towards my expenses. They did

not mind it or complain as they were always informed by the late Dr. Eitel that there was great opening for me and that when I got the Chief Interpretership I could recompense them; he said that the Board were highly pleased at the way I passed my examinations and was positive I would get the appointment, this was in 1894. Sir James Lockhart, Sir Henry May and others always gave me to understand that I would get Mr. Ball's place when he retired. But as time went on and there was no sign of Mr. Ball retiring I got down-hearted at the salary I was getting and as there was no chance of Mr. Ball leaving for a considerable time and that there would be no opening for me in the interpretation line while Mr. Ball remained I made up my mind to join some other branch of the service. Numerous vacancies occurred and I applied for almost every one of any advantage, but was always informed by the Government that I could not be spared from the Magistracy and that my promotion bay in the interpretation line. My next plan was to apply for increases of salary which though highly recommended were refused on the ground that I would get promotion when my turn came. In the meantime I had been offered several outside appointments much better

than the one I was holding, but my parents who were both in

the service at the time objected to me taking them, they being confident all along that I would get the appointment in the end and always advised me to wait patiently. In anticipation of getting Mr. Ball's salary of $300 and compensation making it about $450 or $500 I resigned myself to my fate and remain- ed on a salary of $100 for 8 years from Io94 to 1902.
